Proficiency Levels (as per CEFRL)

Below are the guidelines for French language proficiency as per the CEFR. There are four parts of the exam irrespective of the level of exam taken: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. An individual taking up any level of exam is tested in all the four areas of French language. The French language knowledge in each level is discussed below:

 

DELF / DALF Exams in India

DELF stands for Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française; DALF stands for Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française. These two proficiency tests are designed for non-native French speakers as a way of certifying their knowledge in French language. In each year globally over 300,000 students has registered for the various available French language proficiency tests. These two tests are very important and currently being administered and awarded by the French Ministry of Education. They are regarded as an international benchmark test that gauges the learner’s skill and knowledge in French language. The proficiency tests of DELF and DALF consist of six different diplomas that also meet the standard set by the CEFR (Common European Reference Framework for Languages).

This DELF A1 Syllabus contains an overview of what a student is expected to know at the A1 level. After completing the DELF A1 level course, you should be able to accomplish the following: 

  • Greet people

  • Talk about yourself

  • Talk about where you live

  • Talk about your family members

  • Talk about your likes and dislikes

  • Engage in a simple buy-and-sell situation

  • Ask about the day, the time and the date

  • Accept and refuse

  • Read simple notices, posters and catalogues

  • Fill in a simple form

  • Write a simple postcard  

This DELF A2 Syllabus contains an overview of what a student is expected to know at the A2 level. After completing the DELF A2 level course, you should be able to accomplish the following: 

  • Talk about yourself, your educational background, your job, your family, your neighbourhood

  • Talk about your hobbies and daily activities

  • Ask for goods in a shop where goods are displayed

  • Order a meal in a restaurant if dishes are either displayed or illustrated on the menu 

  • Book a hotel room (face to face)

  • Ask for basic services in a post office or bank

  • Indicate the nature of a medical problem to a doctor

  • Make inquiries about a journey at a travel agency

  • Use public transport (buses, trains and taxis)

  • Ask your way and give directions

  • Buy tickets

  • Read notices, posters, catalogues, timetables, brochures, menus, advertisements, signs

  • Write notes and simple messages

  • Note down times, dates and places from notice boards and announcements

  • Note down instructions and requests such as client orders and delivery dates.

At the B1 level, the student should be able to accomplish the following:

At the B2 level, a student should be able to accomplish the following:

Peut comprendre des conférences et des discours assez longs et même suivre une argumentation complexe si le sujet est relativement familier. 

Peut comprendre la plupart des émissions de télévision sur l'actualité et les informations. 

Peut comprendre la plupart des films en langue standard.

 

Lire

Peut lire des articles et des rapports sur des questions contemporaines dans lesquels les auteurs adoptent une attitude particulière ou un certain point de vue. 

Peut comprendre un texte littéraire contemporain en prose.

Parler

Peut communiquer avec un degré de spontanéité et d'aisance qui rende possible une interaction normale avec un locuteur natif. 

Peut participer activement à une conversation dans des situations familières, présenter et défendre ses opinions.

Peut s'exprimer de façon claire et détaillée sur une grande gamme de sujets relatifs à ses centres d'intérêt.
